Murder at Donwell Abbey by Vanessa Kelly

Murder at Donwell Abbey (An Emma Knightley Mystery)Murder at Donwell Abbey by Vanessa Kelly
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm enjoying this series very much, though I do wonder how many more murders can happen in the area of Highbury before it starts suffering from "Cabot Cove syndrome" and the author has to send her protagonist away so everyone in the place doesn't end up as either a victim or a perpetrator. But that problem still lies in the future, and hopefully she will find a way to avoid it.

Anyway, I find the characters very true to the original, and with her intelligence and penchant for "fixing" things, Emma makes a perfect detective. I also like the way she is becoming closer to Miss Bates, who as it turns out makes quite a good "Watson." (I had always thought that Mr. Woodhouse marrying either her or her widowed mother would both provide a perfect solution to both the Bates women's poverty and companionship for him so that Emma could move to Donwell with Mr. Knightley, and I think that is also being handled very well and believably.) While the book was a bit long for my taste, the solution to the mystery was not too easy to figure out and was also satisfying in the end, and like others, I loved the interactions between Emma and George, as well as her nephew Henry, who I hope will play a part in future adventures as he gets older.
